Program description

The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies: “Information Systems Technology Applications” pathway combines BIS Core courses with coursework, minors, and/or certificates in at least two of five skill-driven clusters:

The curriculum is flexible. Students, in consultation with their BIS advisor, can make changes to the recommended courses taken at VCU. Please note that the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies is not awarded by the School of Business. Non-business majors at VCU are allowed to complete up to 30 credits of coursework offered by the School of Business, including transfer credit.

Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies students may also choose from a single cluster above, but they may only pursue one School of Business minor. For example, if students choose to pursue the Information Systems minor, they will not be eligible to pursue another School of Business minor (Actuarial Science, Sports & Fitness Management, Marketing Insights, Real Estate, Risk Management & Insurance, and Entrepreneurship). However, they may choose to pursue both the Information Systems and Computer Science minors because the Computer Science minor is not housed in the School of Business.

This pathway positions students for a range of careers depending on their choice of coursework: information systems technology in public, private, and entrepreneurial settings, business ownership and creation, and more. Some coursework requires declaring a minor to access, and some minors require a minimum GPA. Advisors in the Interdisciplinary Studies program will help you navigate those requirements. Upon graduation, students will be awarded the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies and likely 1-2 minors or certificates.
